Yes Woman: The Value of the Internship

S unday morning of June 23rd, 2:20am Despite my post's title above, this is not another one of my early- and amateur-career blogs centered around my own experience as an intern. It's about someone else's. Yeah, it might have been fictional - but I'm certain that it was based upon very much truth. The Internship was my favorite of the movie blockbusters on my seen-list this summer. I'm so stricken, and inspired, that I'm at a loss as to where to start. I've got glasses, a to-read paperback, and a single unlit candle on my nightstand. There's an empty pewter picture frame, matching silver earrings, and a travel-y diary journal that goes under-used. Everything's feeling meant to be. I see, next to me, that I collect what inspires me - including friends, like tonight's companions Stepha and Nel - and I collect experiences:  by saying yes, living with intent.. and rallying, when necessary. Tonight, I had a break after work and am glad that it...

Summer Cinema in the Life of Cory

Image
I live for experiences, both my own and the stories about those of others. In my efforts this past month to make the most of sick-days and Cory-time, I've tried to take in as many cinematic ones as I've had time to fit. This, by the way, was whenever I wasn't watching the entirety of the series Arrested Development.  Recommended or discovered films I finally watched: An Education The Kids are Alright Little Miss Sunshine The Details She's the Man And in the theater... Star Trek Now You See Me The Internship Stay tuned for more typey stream-of-consciousness to follow on my favorite so far!

Same Love: A Year Ago, Today

Image
Today, and yesterday, and this past weekend, and I suppose this month so far have all been truly impactful. Every moment, experience has felt aligned, as if each happened for a reason. As I write this, I'm currently snuggled into my newly, neatly made bed - which I've decided is one of my most prized and cherished possessions at this point in my young life. I found this frame (thanks Craigslist) and this cozy mattress (thanks Krysty) all on my own, and overspent on one only to get a deal on the other. So, SO worth it. I also have a new duvet cover, which I figure I'll try out - any excuse for a new beginning.  Sunday ( see above)  was one of the most fun days I've had in quite a while - especially when you consider that I've had the flu for a week and I've been in breakup mode for over a month. I'm glad I'm on my way to feeling better... in all respects. Sunday was filled with almost every friend a girl could ask for, lots of good food and tasty ...

Love Will Set You Free

I've decided that tonight is one for reflection, even if simply for the sake of first s. It's the first night of June, and it's the first night in forever that I've spent with my oldest longest friend, Chels. It's the first Mumford & Sons concert-eve I've experienced. Finally, tonight was the first that I've driven through his neighborhood and down my formerly familiar path to that city since... well, you know. The last time. And I'm okay. I'm more than okay. May has brought me so many new experiences, exhilarating experiences and overwhelming emotions. As I over-enthusiastically bragged to Chels earlier, I have new possessions and icons and symbols in my life now that are MINE and mine alone. From my wall decor to those permanently inked on my personal canvas, they define the new Cory. I've spanned at least 200 miles of the California coast in the past month. I've grown my confidence and relationships and influence at work an unspeaka...

Nostalgic Tendencies

This past Sunday, as the day dimmed from afternoon to dusk, I drove south on the CA-101 to get back to Los Angeles (and rendezvous with three pals for Great Gatsby). I couldn't help but continually look back, via both my rearview and side mirrors, at the gorgeous sunset behind me. I knew it was important to focus on the road, of course; however, I simply sneaked a few glimpses of admiration toward the macaroni yellow hues filling the entire sky in my backward view. Suddenly, the expression dawned on me: Our windshield is larger than the rearview mirror for a reason. Why is it that I'm someone constantly compelled to look back, linger for what are perhaps several moments too many? I'm always  always  doing it: whether reminiscing the current day just passed as the sun sets, or perusing pictures from last weekend's trip, last night's adventures. It's what we do all day, on social media platforms like Instagram, do we not? I said recently that I write to taste...

What I Think the Perfect Me-Day Looks Like

Late night reflections, Thursday May 9th Today could have been any other day. No particular importance is assigned to this date, it's no particular anniversary. It's a Thursday. I've been 24 for three full months. My car Duke's b-day is approaching, as are other markers around what was happening exactly one year ago this time of the year, but I don't need to write or reminisce about those [first date-y types of] things. Instead, today was the ideal version of a ME day. I was off work, which really did result in me missing my team, the Grove, my store, and my daily soul-feeding interactions with interesting people from around LA. But mostly I caught up on things I've been meaning to do, talked with friends I've been overdue on talking to, treated myself to some leisure and some fun. I even had a chance to do some writing before I go to bed. In the spirit of having a full and productive day, I woke up at 7am! What was I thinking, right? I had a Moroccan...

Why I [Try to] Call Myself a Writer

How I began 2013... (originally posted January 16th at 9:02am) It now being officially two weeks into the new year, I'm realizing that I haven't yet actualized any of my goals-slash-resolutions-slash-attempted-life-style-changes made on the eve of this grand new era known as "2013." How and why IS that? Maybe it's laziness, or warranted post-holiday fatigue. Maybe it's my recent sex-addiction, or food-addiction, lack of willpower and/or simple non-abatable desire for constant stimulation - be it in the form of love, snacks or friends and family (sorry, workout; this leaves no time for little old YOU). Well, at least I'm getting in some form of workout most days... Part of my problem is that I'm a PLANNER; rather, to avoid labeling myself, I have a preference toward organization. Thus, I sit down and spend ten minutes thinking: what should I write about today in my stream of consciousness? Consciousness, what are you in the mood to kick out? ...
